At eight years old, Fiona knows her illness is crushing her poor family. Instead of letting them pour money into treatments that can’t save her, she chooses to be the one they resent—destroying her medicine, stealing their savings, and pushing them away with cruel words. Her father eventually gives up on her. Then, on the day she dies, Fiona breaks down in a blood-stained bathroom and reveals the painful truth: she only wanted them to hate her, so losing her wouldn’t break their hearts as much. After death, she enters the underworld and chooses to come back as a cat for three years, silently keeping watch over her family one last time.
